World Challenge has over 30 years of experience supporting students on a wide range of expeditions to far-flung places across the world. In those 30 years, over 150,000 students have visited over 44 countries and learnt about the importance of sustainable travel, what it means to be a global citizen, and how students can learn to think critically about the challenges facing the global population.
We have decided to work with World Challenge and take an expedition of students from years 10 and 12 to Bali in February 2026 to give students an unforgettable experience of island life with a volcano, marine and coastal conservation and opportunities to contribute to a social enterprise where natural resources are used as body care products at local markets.
Educational Outcomes
There are a wide range of educational outcomes for this expedition:
- Students will gain a greater understanding of how to act for a more sustainable future.
- Students will be immersed in different cultures and experiences, growing to understand their role within our global community.
- Students will be challenged to think critically about topical issues that affect our past, present and future worldwide.
- Students will be empowered to build on their self-care strategies, enhancing their physical and mental well-being.
- Students will experience and reflect on the power of being pushed outside their comfort zone, allowing the development of initiative, resilience and confidence.
- Students will build a deeper connection to their own identity and personal values, developing their independence and sense of self.
Highlights of the itinerary
Day 1-2, Travel to Bali and discover the local beach and markets at Sanur. Purchase local SIM cards, exchange local currency and discuss plans for the first few days.
Day 3-5 Learn about coastal conservation at Penida Island by taking part in a social enterprise making soaps out of seaweed and deciding on effective marketing techniques to sell their products. Learn from local farmers about coastal management and the impact of climate change on the area.
Day 6-8 Travel (leaving at midnight) to Mount Batur, an active volcano that dominates the landscape. The challenge is to climb the volcano in time for the dawn to break over the mountain before learning how to cook eggs with the heat from the volcano. Students will then visit Ubud, a cultural hub famous for dance, music and monkeys.
Day 9 - Mundak trek and canoe - a stunning region of rainforests, rice terraces and farms and the best way to explore is on foot and by canoe.
Day 10-12 Students will travel to Lovina to watch the dolphins in the bay, travel to Pemuteran, a village of coastal communities to learn about local fishing and reef restoration projects.
Day 13 - Students will head back to Sanur for a day of rest and relaxation on the beach. Students will be encouraged to reflect on how they have changed and grown through the expedition and what their particular highlights were.
Day 14 - Travel back home to Ely!
