Ely College Christmas Concert

Following the outstanding success of the Community Singers at the Cathedral Concert last July, I invite all those who have (or have had in the past) connections with Ely College, and would like to sing with this group, to meet again � this time for the College Christmas Concert.

CYPS Privacy Notice

With effect from the 2011/12 academic year the Children and Young People�s Services(CYPS), within the Local Authority, has developed a service wide Privacy Notice which includes how personal information is processed by CYPS. This includes data from education settings.

The CYPS Privacy Notice contains details of what information is collected, how it will be used and with whom it will be shared. The aim is to make the Privacy Notice issued to children, young people and parent/carers general and constant.

A-Level results 2011

Students at City of Ely Community College have good reason to celebrate again this year. The students have maintained the improvement seen in results last year by continuing the 100% pass rate (grades A*-E) with 62% of grades at A*-C. However, most significant is the increase in the % of higher grades achieved by students. Achievement of grades A*-B increased by over 10% this year to record levels, with 1 in 3 grades at a grade B or above. Congratulations to all the students who worked so hard to achieve this excellent set of results and to a talented staff team who provided outstanding teaching and support to make this happen.

Everest Challenge by former Ely College student

THE TREK of a lifetime is in store for Ross Woodruffe who will be following his heart for charity by climbing to Everest base camp despite two knee operations in the last year.

The 21-year-old Littleport student aims to raise thousands of pounds for the British Heart Foundation when he makes the trip to Nepal in March 2012.

The former City of Ely Community College student said he felt it was time to set himself a challenge that would also help others.

Summer Multi-Sports 2011

This year the City of Ely Community College PE department will be running the summer multi-sports programme.
If your child is interested in attending the days please complete the permission slip on the information letter (link below) and return it to the PE department as soon as possible.
There are a limited number of spaces, these will be allocated on a first come first served basis

Year 11 fund raising concert

Year 11 students will be organising and performing a music concert in order to raise money for the 2011 Prom.

The concert will be held in the Main Hall at Ely College on the 11th May, from 7pm to 9pm.

Right to Teach, Right to Learn

Dear Parents,

In the past couple of weeks senior staff have been walking around the College, to see what is working well and what needs improving. The attitude and engagement of the overwhelming majority of students is very impressive. Well done! However there is a small minority of students who do not follow the basic rules and expectations of the College.

Saracens Girls Rugby Programme

Three of our students - Anna Goddard, Charley Baxter and Lauren Cordery - were amongst over 80 girls attending one of the biggest girls rugby events of the year - a Rugby Skills Session at Saracens RFU - on Sunday 20th February. To read the full story, please click here.

Car Boot Sale

There will be a car boot sale at the college on Sunday 27th March. Pitches are �6 if booked in advance or �8 on the day. Please ring Linda on (01353) 652818 to book a pitch. Gates open at 0730am for sellers and 8am for buyers. Contributions of books, jewellery, handbags, bric-a-brac etc can be made for us to sell on our own stall. Donations can be dropped off at the Sixth Form at any time. The money raised will be split between the Habitat for Humanity project and the Sixth Form Council.

Students get a taste of working life

Students honed their interview skills and were given a taste of working life at their school�s conference day. Conference days are a regular fixture at the City of Ely Community College and the focus of the latest event was on employability skills and capabilities. Organisers said activities and presentations were designed to give students a head-start in what has become a highly-competitive jobs market. The students were coached in how to set personal goals for their future careers and to evaluate what skills they might need to achieve them. The day included sessions on �how to get hired, not fired�, and how to dress to impress in interviews and at work. Nikki Pritchett, organiser and the college�s work-related learning and enterprise co-ordinator, said: �These young people are faced with very negative messages about job prospects and opportunities, but they have done themselves proud." �It is vitally important that our young people understand the standards of behaviour and dress expected of them in the workplace, and we are indebted to all the businesses and organisations who sponsored and supported this event.�

Conference Day Postponed - Wed 1st Dec - Lessons as Normal

We have taken the decision today to postpone Conference Day planned for tomorrow, Wednesday 1st December.
Therefore all students in the main school will have normal lessons tomorrow and will need to ensure that they are prepared for a normal Wednesday Week A timetable.

Burst Water Main

The burst water main in Cresswell Lane is not affecting us. We are still open and have no plans to close.

6th Form OPEN EVENING

Open Evening

On Wednesday 13th October at 7pm, the College will hold an Open Evening to enable parents and students to look around the college, visit departments and chat with the teachers. The following day (Thursday 14th) from 9am, we will hold an open morning where you will be able to see the school in action.

GCSE Results at the City of Ely

Students and staff at the City of Ely Community College have been celebrating a record breaking year this morning, following the release of the 2010 GCSE results. Overall 74% of students achieved a pass rate with 5 or more A*-C. This has beaten the College�s previous best of 70% in 2009.

A-level students at the City of Ely

Students achieved a pass rate of 100%. Around 64% of these were at grades A*-C, beating the College�s previous record of 58.5% in 2005. Four students were awarded the new A* grade for their work.

GCSE results day

Tuesday 24th August GCSE Results will be available from 10:30am. Please go to the LRC to collect your results.

The timetable for Sports week is as follows:

Please come to school in your proper PE kit.
Go to registration in your form rooms as normal then make your way to the sports centre for Period 1.

Back to School with Virtualisation

Join us for a seminar on 12th May.
During this informal seminar, we will highlight our reasons for adopting ICT virtualisation, the approach we took and the benefits we are now enjoying. At this seminar, we will be participating in an interactive panel session and you will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions to both us and our virtualisation partner.

Ely College Sports Relief Mile 2010

Students and Staff from Ely College participated in the Sports Relief Mile on Friday 19th March. A track was measured out around the college field and students were asked to pay �3 to participate.

Bugsy Malone Tickets

Tickets for the forthcoming production of Bugsy Malone now on sale
Tickets cost �6.50 for Adults and �4.50 for Concessions/Pupils. Performance Dates are Mon 29th, Tue 30th & Wed 31st March. Starts at 7.30pm Pupils wishing to buy tickets can either buy them from the LRC before school or outside LRC during Lunch.

Examinations will still take place even if the college is closed
Students who have external exams, that is GCSE or BTEC or A-levels or Science module exams (NOT mocks or internal exams), exams will take place in school whatever the weather, even if the school is closed for normal lessons unless the school website specifically states otherwise. Failure to attend exams because of the weather counts as an absence as far as the exam boards are concerned and students will not be awarded a grade/mark. Students must ensure that they are dressed appropriately in case of a reduction in heating levels.

College Closed due to Snow

Christmas holiday starts early due to Snow
Due to the snowfall the college was closed on Friday 18th December. It re-opened on Tuesday 5th Jan 2009. (Monday 4th Jan being a Teacher Training Day). All Staff and Students with everyone a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

Mensa Success for College students

Mensa, the �High IQ Society� approached us to see if we wished to test any of our able students. We decided to go ahead and 7 students out of the 12 tested were offered membership of the society. This meant that they were in the top 1-2% nationally for high IQ. One of the students, Laura Garwood, takes up the story.

The Malcolm Whales Inaugural 40-mile Sponsored Walk

During July 2009 of this year a group of 28 students from the College took part in a sponsored walk.
The walk was the first of its kind the school has been involved in.

Year 10 raise a fantastic �1000 for Camtrust

The current Year 10 students at the College have been very successful with their fundraising efforts, supporting the local charity Camtrust.
