Ely News Article:

Proposed Change of School Category from Community to Foundation
22nd April 2010

Notice is given in accordance with section 19(3) of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 that The Governing Body, City of Ely Community College intends to make a prescribed alteration to City of Ely Community College, Community School, Downham Road ELY CB6 2SH. The proposed alteration is to Change School Category from Community to Foundation from 01 September 2010.

Proposed Change to Foundation Status The proposed change from Community to Foundation status is one of a number of initiatives designed to raise standards of teaching and learning, and levels of achievement at City of Ely Community College. The Governors believe that a change of status will help generate amongst the staff and students a different ethos, one of high expectations and a greater responsibility for the future direction of the College. It will help to create a sense of identity and ownership which will promote the desire to succeed and not to settle for less than getting the best from our students in their short time with us. It is important that the College embraces initiatives such as ‘Narrowing the Gap’ so that every student, irrespective of ability or background, achieves their potential. However, in order to make the most of the concept, it is important that the character of the College is such that innovation, if valid, is readily accepted and a desire to raise standards is the norm. The move to Foundation Status will, we believe, be the catalyst that creates an environment which will support positive change, delivers the results demanded by stakeholders, and generates the presumption of success that must become fundamental to the thinking of the College. If the College is to meet the needs of the community it serves it must be confident, first and foremost, in its ability to raise standards across all areas and subsequently to instinctively maintain them at the highest level. Foundation Status will provide greater independence through increased responsibility for college assets, direct employment of staff, and the status as our own admissions authority. The focus on improving standards places great pressure on staff at all levels and the Governors feel that the added autonomy associated with Foundation Status should infuse a greater sense of pride in the College and an increased enthusiasm for change and development. As a consequence it would be an important stepping stone towards achieving the desired progress.
