Ely Sixth Form - Financial Help
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
If your household income is less than £30 810 a year, then you
may be entitled to a weekly payment of up to £30. If you have
not already received an EMA application pack from your school
or college, then call the EMA Partners Information line on
0800 121 8989 or or www.ema.direct.gov.uk
Bishop Laney Trust
The Bishop Laney Trust was founded in 1674 and today helps
people under the age of twenty-five in both further education
and apprenticeships. The principal areas of help are the Parishes
of Ely and Soham but help is also given to the qualifying
inhabitants of all of the surrounding villages.
Areas where help has been given during the last few years
include:
• Book and equipment grants to students at Sixth Form
Colleges and University;
• Help with course fees;
• Assistance with the purchase of tool for apprentices;
• Assistance with expenses onWork Experience;
• Grants for Masters degrees; and, in special cases,
• Travel grants.
No request is dismissed out of hand and every case is judged on
itsmerits. If you would like to apply for a grant either on leaving
your present school or Sixth Form College, please contact the
Secretary of the Charity,
Mr. Richard J. Tyler at 41 St. Mary’s
Street, Ely, Cambs. CB7 4HF and ask for a questionnaire.
Please note however all requests for an academic year must be
received by 1st December after the start of the year (and the
earlier the better). After that date they will not be considered
until the next year. In case you are not ready to apply please
keep a note of this address in a safe place for future use.
Needham’s Foundation
Catherine Needham made similar arrangements to those of
Bishop Laney (above) to give financial assistance to local students
under a scheme which began in 1741 and is now organised by
the Needham’s Foundation.
In order to qualify, a student must either be a resident of Ely or
have attended a school in the city for at least two years.
Needham’s can help students up to the age of 25 with
scholarships, bursaries or maintenance allowances, financial
assistance towards study and necessary items for study or
employment, e.g. books, tools and instruments, and towards
travel abroad for educational reasons.
Littleport Town Lands Charity
If you or your parents live in Littleport, and you are under the
age of 25, you might be eligible for financial assistance from
the Littleport Town Lands Charity.
The trustees, within the limits prescribed by the Scheme, can
award scholarships, exhibitions, bursaries, maintenance
allowances and other benefits to facilitate educational aims.
