Learning Resource Centre (LRC)
Opening Times: 8am to 4:30pm daily
The LRC is staffed by the Learning Resource Centre Manager and Resource Centre Assistant.
A team of student librarians support the LRC staff by issuing and returning books using the computerized issue system and helping other students. Students are recruited form Year 8 upwards and full training is given.
Students can use the LRC from 8am until 4.30pm to access the facilities on offer.
These include:
- a book stock of approximately 15,000
- Newspapers and periodicals
- access to over 40+ computers
- printing facilities
- Careers information
- DVDs
- Audio CDs
- Digital cameras
- Camcorders
Main school students can borrow 3 books for 2 weeks and 6th form students can borrow 6 books for 2 weeks.
The LRC has a wide range of fiction and non fiction stock, which is continually up-dated.
Fiction
Students can reserve books and make requests for new books. They are encouraged to recommend books to other students.
Students are taking part in the Reading Challenge. The challenge is to read a fiction book from 12 different genres by Easter 2010. For each genre read, students will receive a credit.
Non fiction
The non-fiction stock is curriculum linked and regularly up-dated. Staff are asked to recommend books. All levels of literacy are catered for.
6th Form
The 6th form has a silent study area, equipped with 12 laptops. They also have a separate area for their use, where their book stock is held.
Activities held in the LRC
Homework
Students can work in the LRC everyday until 4.30pm to complete homework and coursework. Staff support is always available.
Reading Group
This meets every Wednesday 3.15pm to 4.15pm. Students listen to stories and discuss books they are reading. They also review new books.
Creative Writing Group
This meets every Friday 3.15pm to 4.30pm. Students write stories, poems and comic strips. Each term they produce a magazine called ‘Somethin’ Snazzy’. Each year a writer or storyteller is invited to the College to work with and inspire these students.
Autograph Club
This is a new club, which has been formed by students who are interested in collecting autographs of famous people. They meet every Tuesday 3.15pm to 4.30pm and research famous people and write to them requesting information about their careers and a signed autograph.
Young Co-Operative
These students meet every Monday to organise the sale and promote the use of Fair Trade goods within the College. They organise and hold fund raising events through running their own co-operative business. |
