Vocational Qualifications

Key Stage 4 - Years 10 and 11

Child Development, H.E Food and Construction are NOT part of Design and Technology choices.
Students can select one Design & Technology subject (Graphics, Resistant Materials, Textiles), and may also study Child Development, H.E. Food or Construction alongside a D&T subject.

These courses allow you to develop skills that all employers are looking for: decision making, problem solving, team work, research, time management, organisation, and presentation of work.

Which course is right for you? Most importantly - one you enjoy! Some students enjoy using the tools and machines to make products that they have designed. For others, the interest lies in drawing, modelling and presenting their ideas.

Home Economics - Food and Nutrition

If you are interested in working within a food environment, then this subject would be beneficial to you.
The specification focuses on food and nutrition issues in relation to:

  • nutrition, diet and health throughout life
  • factors affecting consumer choice
  • the nutritional, physical, chemical and sensory properties of foods in storage, preparation and cooking
  • food hygiene
  • safety
  • techniques and skills used in storing, preparation and cooking of food.

Assessment

60% of the final mark is from 4 pieces of coursework made up of 3 short food tasks and one food study task.
The written exam paper carries 40% of the marks and is based on food and nutrition.

Throughout the course you will be prepared for this with group work, videos and individual research.
