Course entry requirements

C or above in Additional Science (Higher Tier) or C or above in Physics and B or above in Maths

Why study Physics?

Physics is an essential requirement formany careers in Science, Engineering and Medicine. Employers in many other fields, value the problem solving nature of the subject.
The study of Physics at AS and A2 level should be seen as making a contribution towards life-long learning and an understanding of technological advances and their impact on modern day society.

What will you study?

The course is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts in Physics. Applications of Physics are covered throughout the specification.

AS course

  • Unit 1 - Mechanics
  • Unit 2 - Electrons,Waves and Photons
  • Unit 3 - Internal assessment

A2 course

  • Unit 1 - Newtonian World
  • Unit 2 - Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics
  • Unit 3 - Internal assessment of practical tasks set by the examining board

Method of assessment

In each year there will be two examinations plus an internally assessed practical task, with AS and A2 marks contributing equally to the final A level grade.

Future prospects

The Advanced Physics specification has been designed to prepare you to progress onto higher education, to follow courses such as electronics, computer science, physics and all engineering disciplines.
It is also a useful qualification for a number of careers including engineering and gas, water, electrical and environmental services.
