Why study Biology?
Do you want to find out about issues such as the Human
Genome Project, Farming and the Environment and HIV and
Aids? Are you intending to continue studies in Biology,Medical
subjects, Environment or Sport after Sixth Formstudy? Are you
looking for a fascinating and relevant subject to compliment
courses in Psychology, Geography or other sciences or to
broaden your course?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then Biology is
the course for you.
This course aims to stimulate an interest in Biology and develop
an understanding of biological principles and their application.
It emphasises the social and applied aspects of Biology, and
how the subject contributes to the needs of society. Students
are encouraged to develop an understanding of the scientific
method and its application, to use secondary sources of
information and to communicate biological information both
orally and in writing.
What will you study?
The course is divided into topics, each covering different key
concepts in Biology. Applications of Biology are covered
throughout the specification.
AS Units
- Cells, Exchange and Transport.
- Molecules, Biodiversity and Human Interactions.
- Practical Skills in Biology 1.
A2 Units
- Communication, Homeostasis and Energy.
- Control, Genomes and Environment.
- Practical Skills in Biology 2.
Method of assessment
There are two exams in Year 12 which account for 80% of the
qualification and an internally assessed practical skills unit. At A2
there are a further two exams and a practical skills assessment.
Future prospects
This course is essential for students who wish to pursue careers
in biological sciences and medicine.
Career opportunities are
varied, with higher education courses in Medicine, Veterinary
Science, biological, environmental and sports studies.
Several local biotechnology companies and other organisations
are prepared to employ and train students with Advanced Level
qualifications in Biology.
