The Science Department
Key Stage 4 - Years 10 and 11
Students will follow one of the courses outlined below:
Triple Award
Students follow a course that, over two years, results in GCSEs in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. This course will meet the needs of those looking to follow science courses at KS5. Assessment will be by a combination of coursework and external examination.
Double Award
Students follow a common course in Year 10 which leads to a GCSE in Science A. On completion of GCSE Science, students will either follow the Additional Science A course at Foundation or Higher Level. This is a concept-led course, that meets the needs of students who wish progress to Further and Higher Education and leads to the award of a second GCSE in Science. Assessment is based upon a combination of external examination and coursework.
BTEC First Certificate and Diploma in Applied Science
The Edexcel BTEC Level Two First Certificate and Diploma are designed to give a broad introduction to the working sector and offer opportunities for access to BTEC National Qualifications. A pass at First Certificate is equivalent to 2 GCSEs at Grade C, and the Diploma to 4 GCSEs at Grade C. Assessment is totally based on completion of assignments. It is anticipated that the majority of students following the BTEC will complete the Diploma.
Progression
Science can currently be studied at BTEC Level 3 and as single A/S subjects - chemistry, biology, physics, at Ely Sixth Form Centre.
