Virtual Athletics

SSCO Virtual Athletics SSCO Virtual Athletics

Virtual athletics has been the focus of many primary schools for the past term. 6th form students from Ely College have been running the sessions with the help of teachers from the primary schools and students.
The aim is to deliver a competitive festival that can be used again by teachers. Students complete 5 activities that test them on speed, agility, balance and accuracy. Their results can be compared to other schools in the area. The activities can be modified so that all schools could complete the activities using modified equipment that they would have in their schools.
The Ely Family aims to have a minimum of 60 students participate in every school, some schools have already exceeded this number and tested all students in years 3 to 6. It is hoped that this will help identify students who may be considered for gifted and talented

Links with clubs

SSCO club links

The Ely Family have made many links with community clubs of the past months. These links have enabled clubs like the Fairy School of Dance to come into schools and run dance workshops to give students an opportunity to experience something exciting and new, which they can access in their community. Both Littleport and Ely College took advantage of this great opportunity and as a result have had students attend the club outside of school hours.SSCO club links

Ely College are also in the process of working with the Littleport Cricket Club to come and assist in lessons as a way of increasing the number of young people playing cricket in the local area. Students have also experienced training in martial arts this year which was received extremely well by both and boys and girls ranging from year 7 through to year 10.

Leadership

SSCO leadership SSCO leadership

Leadership has been an important focus for the Ely Family. This year we have used over 60 young leaders in a range of festivals and then also developed leadership opportunities though sports captaincy, Young Ambassadors and through intra-school competition.

In primary schools, the playground leader programme was initiated in Millfield Primary School and The Lantern Community Primary school and continues to be used and monitored. Playground Leaders from the Lantern Community School assisted in the running of their own Virtual Athletics festival.

Young Ambassadors

SSCO Young Ambassadors

This year we again have selected two Young Ambassadors to represent the school in a range of meetings with other schools from the Witchford Partnership. The PE Department are happy to announce our Young Ambassadors for this year are Ryan Goodson and Kayley Soanes.
Both Ryan and Kayley display the qualities that should make successful leaders. They started their new role as YA’s by attending a meeting at the Needhams Farm venue, where they discussed ways of promoting the Olympics Games and their values. They have since attended another meeting which they spent team building with other YA’s and were filmed doing the Witchford Sports Partnership Olympic Dance. It will be going to all the schools in Cambridgeshire as part of our work promoting the Olympics. It will also be going on the Cambridgeshire CC website, hopefully the GOLD website (which is the Cambridge Olympic Website). There is also the potential for it to go on YST website and from there who knows!!!

Our Young Ambassadors along with 2 other year 10 students attended a Handball Training course as part of the change for Life initiative. These young individuals learnt the art of coaching and ways they can deliver activities for training. The students have returned eager to start their club and have had regular attendance over the Spring Term. The club is student organised and run, they hope to arrange a fixture against another school in the coming future!

Teacher Training- Handball course

Two members of Ely College were given the opportunity through the SSCo Partnership to also attend Handball Training. Both returned to their department with an increased knowledge about handball and have delivered lessons to a range of students since returning.
Primary teachers have been offered a range of training opportunities over the previous terms. All schools received training on Crazy Catch and received resources so they could return to their schools and introduce a sport that has been developed for all primary school abilities. There has also been the opportunity to attend training on gymnastics, athletics and tri–golf.

Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented identification has been another strong focus point for the Ely College PE department. The constant development of the ‘Triple A Club’ which targets students on their ability, attitude and achievement has continued to grow offering students opportunities to challenge their skills and participate in training and competition.
In conjunction with Witchford Village Sports College students in the Triple A club have participated in gifted and talented exchanges where they attend a school, participate in the a skills session followed by a competition component against the other school. Sports that will be part of the programme include volleyball, SAQ (speed, agility and quickness), table tennis and Gymnastics.

Find out more about the Triple A Club here.

Satellite Clubs

So far this year we have run satellite clubs for cheer leading in both Millfield and Ely College. These will continue after the half term break:

  • Millfield, Tuesday 1st March 3:15pm – 4:15pm – KS1 & KS2
  • Ely, Wednesday 2nd March 4:00 – 4:45pm – KS1 & KS2

Flyers

This year we have created a flyer that has been delivered to all schools in the area. Flyers contain information on the range of clubs in the local area. Details of how clubs can be contacted and when they are held can be found in the flyer and all clubs have been CBR checked by the partnership.

Step into Sport

The Step into Sport programme is an initiative that allows students to record and get rewarded for volunteering time towards sport not only in the school environment but within local community sporting clubs also.
Students record their hours on line, where a member from their sporting club or teacher will verify their hours. Students receive certificates and rewards at certain milestones.

Ely Family Olympic Table

As a way of encouraging our primary schools to enter into as many available festivals as possible, the Partnership has created a table that awards points to schools based most importantly on participation, but also awards extra points for performance. Below is the current points table for our KS2 Festivals:

1 St Mary’s C of E Junior School 64 points
2 Downham Feoffees C of E Primary School 63 points
3 Lantern Community Primary School 53 points
4 Millfield Primary School 44 points
5 St John’s Community Primary School 20 points
6 Littleport Community Primary School 20 points

5 Hour Offer

This year the PESSYP (PE & Sport Strategy for young People) is focusing on the ‘5 hour offer’. By 2011 the ambition is to offer all children at least 5 Hours of sport every week. These hours can comprise of:

  • At least 2 hours of high quality PE during curriculum time
  • The opportunity to participate in 3 hours of Sport beyond the school day. This could comprise of afterschool clubs, community clubs and providers.

The Department at Ely are offering a range of after school clubs including dance, dodge ball, football, girls only gym sessions and boxing. We encourage parents and students to check our club times on the web site and attend as many as possible.

Step Into Sport Volunteer Hours

We would like to acknowledge the great work our 2 sport committee captains have been doing! Michael and Sophie are doing a fantastic job organising after school clubs. Michael is now registered for 80 hours of Volunteer time, whilst Sophie is over 50 Hours now. Well done guys!!

We would also like to make special mention to Eleanor Barnes-Western Who has received an award for 100 Hours of Volunteer time. This is an outstanding achievement and is great to see Ely Students giving back to their community.

Hockey festival

Prior to half term break for the spring term we held another festival, this time for hockey. Students from Downham Feoffees, St Mary’s, The Lantern Primary School, St Johns and Littleport attended  the festival and all participated with much enthusiasm.
The day involved year 3 and 4 students rotating around a range of skill stations which were lead by some of our year 10 Btec students. Both Ely students and the primary students are to be commended on their approach to the day, at times the weather created freezing and difficult working environments, but the students continued to work hard on the stations.
We would like to thank Trevor from Ely Hockey Club for volunteering his time and assisting in the running of the day. It is great that we have such strong links with the club, and we look forward to working with Ely hockey club again. If anyone is interested in pursuing hockey as a sport than please take a look at the Ely Hockey Club web page http://www.elycityhockeyclub.co.uk/

JFO - Junior Football Organisers

The year 11 Btec students ran their first JFO festival on the 26th of March and did a wonderful job. The students were responsible for organising, running and were each responsible for a school team throughout the day.
The festival focused on increasing participation of girls in football and a total of 5 teams attended. The primary students participated in an hour of skills and coaching from the Btec students and then moved on to small games. All games were played in great spirit and sportsmanship. Millfield were the eventual winners of the day and will now represent the Ely Family in the Cambridgeshire Girls County Finals. Congratulations to Millfield and the other participating schools!

Tag Rugby Festival

We are happy to report that Ely St Mary’s Junior School attended the County Tag Rugby festival last term and won their division. Well done St Mary’s!!!!!!!!

This year the PE department have selected Katie Goodman and Jack Ure from Year 10 to be our Young Ambassadors. Jack and Katie were chosen due to their contribution to the PE department, their positive leadership skills and also their own personal success in sport. The Role of a Young Ambassador will be to promote the spirit and the Ethos of the Olympic Games not only in our school but also our linked primary schools. They will also be trying to increase participation in sport with the school clubs and working with our sports committee. Katie and Jack are currently running a ‘YA-ing’ competition in the school, to create awareness of their role. The competition is being run as an inter-from competition currently and the winners from Ely will get the chance to compete in a nation wide competition. It’s a very simple concept, with students finding creative ways to make the letters Y and A using their bodies. They can do this in any of the following categories:

  1. YA-ing on mass
  2. YA-ing in your local community
  3. YA-ing in the theme of the Olympics
  4. YA-ing with a Star

Forms 7 to 9 have been involved in this and have done a fantastic job so far!
Katie and Jack have also been registering members of the college on the youth sport trust passport program.  This is enabling the PE department to track the amount of time that students are spending volunteering their time to sport. It also allows students to register their hours and receive formal recognition for their generosity.

So far this year Ely has hosted 2 festivals for our family primary schools. Both the  Tag Rugby day and Cross Country Festival were very successful and were enjoyed by Primary students from Lantern Primary School, Millfield primary school, St Mary’s Primary, St Johns and Downham Feoffees. This was largely due to the support of our Young leaders from Year 10 who officiated the festival. Both Downham Feoffees and Millfield took 1st and 2nd in both these festivals!!

In the coming weeks the young leaders will be involved in running a Hockey festival, while many of our year 10 students will be involved in leading hockey lessons for the Lantern Primary school!
