GCSE Physical Education

Pupils can choose to take GCSE Physical Education during Key Stage 4, combining practical with theory. At City of Ely we study the edexcel syllabus where the GCSE course is divided into three areas; Practical, Theory and Analysis of Performance.

Practical = 60%

This 60% is split into the following categories:

  • 25% practical grades throughout the course

Pupils take part in numerous physical activities during the two years where they are assessed against the edexcel grading criteria.

  • 25% final practical grades within four sports

Students are moderated in their four chosen sports which they were graded highest in from at least two different Activity Groups. These Groups are as follows; Games, Athletics, Swimming, Gymnastics, Dance and Adventurous Activities.

  • 12% Analysis of Performance

Pupils will be required to complete and analyse a Personal Exercise Program creating a decision making process which is needed to provide improvement to performance. Students will hold a role as a ‘reflective performer’ applying a link between the application of skills and the appreciation of the factors affecting participation, performance and Health.

Theory = 40%

Pupils will study the theory on a weekly basis to cover the required curriculum in preparation for their final written exam. Students will need to know long term and short term effects of exercise are on the body in relation to a health active lifestyle. This is built up through components such as Principles of Training, Muscular, Skeletal and Circulatory system, Diet, Nutrition and Drugs. Students will also look at what affects peoples involvement in sport, understanding the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
