The Physical Education Department
Key Stage 4 - Years 10 and 11
Within Physical Education there are three options available to students at Key Stage 4. Please click on one of the items below for more information.
- BTEC Sport Level 2 – First Diploma
- BTEC Sport Level 2 – Extended Certificate
- GCSE Physical Education
Option (1) would count for two of your selections. Option (2) and (3) only count for one of your selections. You can only choose one of the above.
Key differences:
- BTEC Level 2 courses have no exams, it is all coursework assessment. You do not need to be a high level practical performer.
- GCSE includes a final exam and does assess your practical ability.
Sport BTEC - Level 2 First Diploma
If there are too many students opting for Physical Education, you may be required to write a supporting letter saying why you wish to choose it.
A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. The course suits practical learners who have keen interest in the sports environment. The course introduces you to basic first aid, leadership and sports coaching. There is also an element of practical sport where students improve their individual skills. The course also provides a good basis to go on to more advanced work-related qualifications.
Course structure
The course is made up of six units: two core units and four specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in more depth.
Core Units:
- The Body in Sport
- Health, Safety and Injury in Sport
Specialist Units:
- The Sports Industry
- Preparation for Sport
- Planning and Leading Sports Activities
- Practical Sport
Assessment
All individual units are assessed and graded. These individual grades form an overall grade for the qualification and as there are no exams the assignments are on-going throughout the two year course. A key element of the course is the ability to meet deadlines and produce well organised pieces of coursework.
After Key Stage 4
A BTEC First Certificate prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding to go on to a more advanced course such as:
- BTEC National Diploma, Certificate or Award in Sport (Outdoor Education)
- BTEC National Diploma, Certificate or Award in Sport (Performance and Excellence)
- BTEC National Diploma, Certificate or Award in Sport (Sports Development and Fitness)
- A Level Physical Education
Single award
Students will only be able to choose GCSE PE or BTEC extended certificate. Students will be advised on the course which is most appropriate to their learning needs.
