The Modern Foreign Languages Department
Key Stage 4 - Years 10 and 11
Spanish
Spanish can be part of your programme of study for the English Baccalaureate.
This is our brand new course which we launched successfully for the first time last year, due to high student demand.
We are continuing to offer Spanish GCSE because we understand that an increasing number of students want to be able to communicate when they are on holiday, visiting family or perhaps trekking further afield to South America and beyond! Studying Spanish is a great way of adding a little Latino flare into your life and is a brilliant way of getting a qualification in one of the most exciting school subjects.
You will be learning a language spoken by millions of people around the globe – and as an added bonus, Spanish has similarities with French and this can make it easier for students to pick up.
We can offer you brand new course books, after-school help, interactive work and a quality qualification in a subject that is as interesting as it is fun.
If you are interested in taking Spanish we will need you to be quick on your feet and have a thirst for learning languages – but you do not need to worry about not having studied the language before as your teacher will begin from scratch and it is possible to complete the GCSE in two years.
You will study the four communication skills
- listening
- speaking
- reading
- writing
and complete a test of your abilities in all areas.
Unit 1 - Listening - 20% of your total marks
- Foundation - 30 minutes + 5 minutes reading time
- Higher - 40 minutes + 5 minutes reading time
Unit 2 - Reading - 20% of your total marks
- Foundation - 30 minutes
- Higher - 40 minutes
Unit 3 - Speaking - 30% of your total marks
- Controlled assessment - 2 tasks internally assessed and submitted for moderation. These will be in the form of a dialogue and you can keep practicing – it is not a one-time only exam.
Unit 4 - Writing - 30% of your total marks
This is a ‘controlled assessment’ (think ‘coursework’) and consists of 2 tasks which are each broken down into three stages.
- Stage 1 - this you will be taught in the normal way
- Stage 2 - you will be given a written task title and you will have six hours classroom preparation time
- Stage 3 - you complete the task in class
