The History Department

Key Stage 3 - Years 7 to 9

The History curriculum in Years 7 & 8 will be taught in 4 themes (significance, change and continuity, cultural, ethnic and religious diversity and interpretation). From September 2010, the Year 9 curriculum will cover the themes of cause and consequence and chronological understanding. This is in line with the new National Curriculum. From September 2009, Year 9 will still be taught the old curriculum.

Year 7 - Change and Continuity
How has the Olympics changed over time?
What is History?
How did the Black Death affect people’s lives?

Year 8 - Cultural, Ethnic and Religious Diversity
How important was the Church in Medieval life?
What was the impact of the changes to the Church in Tudor times?
What were the secrets of Elizabeth’s success?
Why did people believe in witchcraft in the seventeenth century?
Why is British society so diverse?
How was the Holocaust allowed to happen?

Year 8 – Interpretation
Was Hitler entirely to blame for the Second World War?
Was the Battle of Stalingrad the major turning point of the Second World War?
Did life continue as normal on the Home Front 1939-1945?

Year 9 (1750-1900)
What was Britain like in 1750?
What were Victorian towns like?
What was the slave trade and why was it abolished?

Year 9 (twentieth century world)
How important was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand?
Was Field Marshall Haig the Butcher of the Somme?
What were the turning points of the Second World War?
How far was Hitler responsible for the Second World War?
