The Design & Technology Department
Key Stage 4 - Years 10 and 11
Child Development, H.E Food and Construction are NOT part of Design and Technology choices.
Students can select one Design & Technology subject (Graphics, Resistant Materials, Textiles), and may also study Child Development, H.E. Food or Construction alongside a D&T subject.
These courses allow you to develop skills that all employers are looking for: decision making, problem solving, team work, research, time management, organisation, and presentation of work.
Which course is right for you? Most importantly - one you enjoy! Some students enjoy using the tools and machines to make products that they have designed. For others, the interest lies in drawing, modelling and presenting their ideas.
Resistant Materials
This is the course for those who enjoy making things in the workshop.
Assessment
60% of the final marks are given for designing and then making a product, which could be batch produced; and, because the coursework mark is so important for success, the first part of the course is a number of shorter projects which develop the skills you will need for the assessed work.
The exam you sit is worth 40% of the available marks and is based on knowledge you will gain throughout the course when designing and working with materials. The last part of the course, when the project work is finished, concentrates on preparing you for this.
