KS3 Design and Technology: Food and Textiles


This is a modular course with students being taught for 1 lesson per week. Students are taught food and textiles in 4 modules each year. In years 7 and 8 the modules are approximately 9 weeks long, in year 9 students study 2 modules of 15 weeks, during which time final KS3 assessments are made, and 2 final modules of 3 weeks long.


Year 7 Food consists of 2 modules:

  • Module 1 – Healthy Eating Vegetables (including the Active Kids get Cooking Bronze award and modules taken from the Licence to Cook programme) Practical and theory work is covered which relate to topics such as healthy dips, savoury toasties, soup making, savoury muffins and layered pasta salad. These enable students to learn to use equipment safely and develop practical skills.
  • Module 2 – Healthy Eating Fruit where students develop and reinforce practical skills and increase their understanding by making items such as fruit fusion, fruity flapjacks, fruit Smoothies and.

Year 7 Textiles consists of 2 modules:

  • Module 1 – CAD/CAM where students use basic computer designing and making techniques to make a small bag with a drawstring fastening. During this module students are taught to work safely and to develop their machining skills so that they can make an item which functions.
  • Module 2 – Decorative stitching where students explore the pre-programmed decorative stitches on the sewing machine to produce some juggling bags. This task involves developing their practical skills to enable more accurate machining.

 

Year 8 Food consists of 2 modules:

  • Module 1 –  (including the Active Kids get Cooking Silver award and modules taken from the Licence to Cook programme) Practical and theory work is covered which relate to topics such as Scones, bread Rolls, Burgers and Pizza. These will enable students to develop their ability  to use equipment safely and increase practical skills.
  •  Module 2 – Baking Skills where students develop and reinforce practical skills and increase  their understanding by making items such as  Fruit Crumble, Microwave Sponge pudding, Swiss roll, Jam tart and Batch baking of Buns.

Year 8 Textiles consists of 2 modules:

  • Module 1 – CAD/CAM where students use basic computer designing and making techniques to make a small bag with a drawstring fastening. During this module students are taught to work safely and to develop their machining skills so that they can make an item which functions.

NB This module will be replace for the next academic year

  • Module 2 – Quilted pencil case/make up bag. During this module students will learn new practical  skills such as quilting, appliqué and attaching Velcro. They will continue to improve their control of the sewing machine and develop organisational and designing skills.

 

Year 9 Food consists of 2 modules:

  • Module 1 –  Gold award – Cook Chill Task – students design, plan and make dishes that could be served in the school canteen. They work with staple foods pasta, potato, rice, bread wraps and couscous to produce interesting dishes. They learn to make the sauces that often are served with these foods. They gain an understanding of foods that originated in other countries. The work covered in this module contributes to the students KS3 teacher assessment.
  • Module 2 –Delicious Desserts – non-assessed module where students their practical skills  and make some desserts which are suitable for eating in summer. Summer fruits are used.

 

Year 9 Textiles consists of 2 modules:

  • Module 1 – Making A Cushion from recycled fabrics. Using the theme of ‘Celebrity’ students design, plan, make and evaluate a cushion.  Skills developed in this module contribute to students KS3 teacher assessment
  • Module 2 – Wacky Face project – students used a variety of materials to make a fabric picture of themselves. This is also a non- assessed module.
