Course entry requirements
C or above in Art, Applied Art or Photography
Why study Photography?
This is an exciting course that is suitable for students who have
taken GCSE in an art related subject.
The course covers all aspects of using a 35mm camera, studio
lighting and darkroom techniques to create and print black and
white images. Colour photography is introduced as a digital
project using Adobe Photoshop.
What will you Study?
AS - year 12
Unit 1 - Coursework Portfolio
- Students produce a portfolio of work from starting points,
topics or themes given to them. This can comprise of a
single, sustained project, theme or course of study, a number
of smaller projects or combination of work presented
in sketchbooks and/or mounted on sheets or any other
appropriate format.
- The focus is on including work that shows exploration, research,
acquisition of techniques and skills.
Unit 2 - Controlled Assignment
- Students select one starting point froman externally set exam
paper.
- Students are given a set period ot time to produce preparatory
work.
- Students are then given 5 hours of controlled time to work on
developing their idea into a realisation/outcome.
A2 - Year 13
Unit 3 - Personal Investigation
- Students will develop work in response to an idea, issue,
concept or theme of their choice.
- The investigation includes a related personal study that must
be between 1000 – 3000 words which will include written
material of a critical analytical nature.
Unit 4 - Controlled Assignment
- Students select one starting point from an externally set
question paper.
- Students are given a set period of time to produce a clearly
defined selection of work which will lead to a finished piece.
- Students are then given 15 hours controlled time in which they
work to plan and realise their ideas into a final outcome.
Method of assessment
At the end of the year all components will be assessed via
internal and external moderation.
Future prospects
Photography lends itself to a variety of fields such as: studio
advertising, fashion photography, news photography,
photo journalism, portrait photography, forensic photography,
public relations, commercial and industrial photography,
photographic marketing and aerial photography.
